How we scored them

Each light is scored on five criteria: performance, build, value, safety listing and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. No listing here states an electrical safety listing, so every light scores zero on that criterion; the ranking comes from the other four.

Product Shop Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
KAISAL SL37 Timing Light 9.4 24 19 21 0 3
Innova 5568 Timing Light 9.4 29 21 18 0 2
Fxsomgt TL-01 Timing Light 9.4 24 19 20 0 3
Innova 3568 Timing Light 9.4 28 20 18 0 2
OBDMONSTER PPRO Timing Light 9.4 23 19 20 0 2

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

What the listings tell you

Readouts: digital tach, advance, dwell and voltage on the Innova 5568; digital advance and tach on the Innova 3568; analog strobes on the rest. RPM range: 9,990 on both Innovas, 10000 on the KAISAL, 1000 stated on the Fxsomgt, none stated on the OBDMONSTER. Leads: 10 ft (Fxsomgt), 6 ft detachable (Innova 5568), 4.54 ft (KAISAL), detachable (Innova 3568), none stated (OBDMONSTER). Protection: reverse polarity and overload on the KAISAL and Fxsomgt; none stated on the rest. Warranties run 1 year (OBDMONSTER, both Innovas) to 2 years (Fxsomgt) to 3 years (KAISAL).

Buying guide: best timing light

Digital vs analog

Digital lights put numbers on a screen: the Innova 5568 shows tach, advance, dwell and voltage, and the 3568 shows advance from 0 to 90 degrees with tach on a split LCD. Analog strobes like the KAISAL, Fxsomgt and OBDMONSTER flash the mark and let your eyes do the reading. For setting advance precisely, digital wins; for occasional checks, a strobe is enough.

RPM range and advance

The Innova units read to 9,990 RPM and the KAISAL to 10000, which covers any gasoline engine you will time. The Fxsomgt’s stated 1000 rpm reads as understated; treat it as a listing figure. Advance matters on engines with vacuum or mechanical advance: the Innova 3568 reads 0 to 90 degrees directly, and the OBDMONSTER has an advance function without a stated range.

Leads and protection

A long lead reaches across the bay: 10 ft on the Fxsomgt, 6 ft on the Innova 5568, 4.54 ft on the KAISAL. Reverse polarity and overload protection, on the KAISAL and Fxsomgt, guard against hookup mistakes and current spikes; the rubberized clip sleeves add safety. The Innovas rely on their shock-proof housings instead.

Hookup and safe use

Hooking up a timing light is simple but order matters. Clamp the red clip to the battery positive terminal and the black clip to negative, then hook the inductive pickup around the No. 1 cylinder’s high-voltage wire with the arrow on the clamp pointing toward the spark plug, as both the OBDMONSTER and Fxsomgt listings stress. A loose or backwards pickup gives erratic flashes or none at all.

Keep the leads clear of the fan and belts: the Innova 5568’s molded boot exists because a strobe near spinning blades is a hazard. Work with the engine at idle, keep hands away from moving parts, and never touch the high-voltage leads while the engine runs. The KAISAL and Fxsomgt protection circuits guard the tool and battery against reversed clips and overloads, but they do not protect you: eye protection and tied-back sleeves are still the rule.

Garage safety

Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

What to check before you buy

Advance, tach and dwell: pay for what you will use

The digital features are the price of admission here, so match them to the work. The Innova 3568 reads ignition advance directly on a 0 to 90 degree scale and runs a digital tachometer from 249 to 9,990 RPM, which covers setting advance on most distributors. The Innova 5568 adds dwell and voltage to the tach and advance readouts, a four-function display for the mechanic who diagnoses as well as sets timing. Both Innovas carry the patented skip circuitry rated up to 9,990 RPM. The KAISAL, Fxsomgt and OBDMONSTER take a different approach: an advance function that detects the knock suppression control system and the vacuum advance angle control system, changing the advance angle with speed. If you set timing on modern electronic ignitions, that detection matters; if you only check base timing on an old small block, the simpler readout does the job.

Lead length and the pickup

Lead length decides whether the light reaches the battery and the No. 1 plug wire without stretching. The OBDMONSTER ships a 10FT lead, the longest here; the Innova 5568 uses detachable 6-foot leads with the inductive pickup; the Fxsomgt lead is 4.54FT. On a big engine bay or a truck, the longer lead is the difference between a comfortable hookup and a strained one. The pickup design matters too: the KAISAL and Fxsomgt use a sliding clamp-on inductive pickup, and both listings stress the same detail, the arrow on the clamp must point toward the spark plug for normal working. Red and black sensor clips distinguish the poles, and the Fxsomgt adds rubberized sleeve protectors over the metal alligator clips with a strong bite that resists falling off.

Protection circuits and the housing

Reversed battery clips are the classic mistake, and the KAISAL and Fxsomgt listings both state reverse polarity protection plus overload protection that disconnects the current if the load runs too large. The Innova 5568 answers a different hazard with a heavy-duty shock proof housing and a molded boot that protects against the fan blades, plus a molded plastic storage case for the kit. The KAISAL and Fxsomgt shells are high-quality ABS, described as impact-resistant and hard to wear. The Fxsomgt promises 3-year product service with a technical team behind it. A timing light lives in a toolbox and works inches from spinning steel; buy the housing and the protection circuits for the engine bay you actually work in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a timing light?

Connect red to battery positive and black to negative, clamp the inductive pickup on the No. 1 plug wire with the arrow toward the plug, start the engine and aim the strobe at the timing marks. The flash freezes the mark so you can read it.

How does a timing light work?

Each spark firing triggers a strobe flash. At idle the flashes come slow enough that the crankshaft mark appears frozen under the light, showing where the spark fires relative to top dead center.

What is ignition advance?

Advance is how many degrees before top dead center the spark fires. The Innova 3568 reads 0 to 90 degrees directly; the OBDMONSTER and KAISAL adjust for vacuum and knock-controlled advance.

Do I need a digital timing light?

Not always. Digital readouts help when you set advance often or want tach and dwell too. For a basic timing check, an analog strobe like the KAISAL does the job.

Will a timing light work on any engine?

These five work on 12V gasoline ignition systems, 2 and 4-stroke. They do not work on diesel or coil-on-plug systems without an accessible plug wire.
