How we scored them
Each wrench is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. Accuracy, range and calibration documentation count under performance. No listing names a safety standard, so safety scores zero for all six.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GEARWRENCH 85066 | 9.6 | 32 | 22 | 16 | n/a | 2 |

| SUZUME SM3101 | 9.6 | 29 | 20 | 22 | n/a | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Safety counts only for powered gear or where the listing states safety features; where it does not apply, the score is taken over the remaining 90 points.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 torque wrench listings. Every one gave a range and an accuracy, either 3 or 4 percent, but few said over what part of the range that accuracy holds, and only 2 gave a clear warranty term. Several spec tables repeat a different model’s figures, so we read the title and bullets.
Buying guide: torque wrenches
Pick the range around your jobs
Click wrenches are most accurate in the middle and top of their scale, typically from 20 to 100 percent. Many car lug nuts sit around 80 to 100 ft-lb and many truck lug nuts higher; check your owner’s manual. A 10 to 150 ft-lb wrench covers most cars; 25 to 250 ft-lb covers trucks.
3 or 4 percent
Either is fine for wheels and chassis. A certificate that states the measured result matters more than the headline number.
One direction or two
Dual-direction wrenches also measure counterclockwise, for left-hand threads. Most work does not need it.
Care and calibration
Never use a click wrench to break bolts loose. Wind it back to the lowest setting after use so the spring relaxes, and have it checked periodically, for example yearly or after a drop.
Pair it with an impact gun
Run lug nuts on with an air impact wrench or cordless impact only to snug, then finish with the torque wrench in a star pattern with the wheel on the ground.
Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size torque wrench do I need for lug nuts?
A 1/2 in drive wrench whose range comfortably includes your lug nut specification, typically 10 to 150 ft-lb for cars and up to 250 ft-lb for trucks.
Is a click torque wrench accurate enough?
Yes. 3 to 4 percent is well within what wheel and chassis work needs. Keep it calibrated and use it in the upper part of its range.
Should I store a torque wrench at zero?
Store it at its lowest marked setting, not below, so the spring is relaxed without disturbing the mechanism.
Can I loosen bolts with a torque wrench?
No. Breaking bolts loose can overload the mechanism and spoil its calibration. Use a breaker bar or impact wrench.
How often should a torque wrench be calibrated?
A common rule is once a year or about every 5,000 cycles for DIY use, and any time it is dropped.
