How we scored them
Each wrench is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None states a UL or ETL listing for the tool or charger, so all score zero on safety. Listings that give only one inflated torque figure score lower on performance than those that separate fastening and breakaway torque.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DCF900P1 | 9.6 | 34 | 24 | 20 | 0 | 3 |
| CRAFTSMAN CMCF940M1 | 9.6 | 32 | 22 | 20 | 0 | 3 |

| DEWALT ATOMIC DCF921B | 9.4 | 26 | 22 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
What the listings tell you
We read 13 cordless impact wrench listings. Twelve gave a torque figure, but only a few separated fastening torque from breakaway torque. Only 4 stated a warranty term, and none stated a safety listing. Several near-identical kits from different sellers quote 1,500 ft-lb of breakaway torque.
Buying guide: an impact wrench for lug nuts
Fastening vs breakaway torque
Breakaway (or “nut-busting”) torque is the peak the wrench reaches when loosening a stuck nut. Fastening torque is what it delivers when tightening. Big breakaway numbers help with rusted nuts; for tightening you want control, not maximum force.
How much torque do lug nuts need?
Most passenger cars specify roughly 80 to 100 ft-lb for lug nuts and many trucks somewhat more; your owner’s manual has the exact figure. Any wrench here will remove them unless they are seized. Never final-tighten with the impact: run the nuts on in a low mode, then finish in a star pattern with a torque wrench.
Batteries and platform
A big-brand tool fits a battery family you can grow into. Budget kits include two batteries but only fit their own brand. Bare tools are cheaper if you already own the batteries.
Sockets
Use impact-rated sockets, not chrome hand-tool sockets, which can crack. A hog ring anvil lets you swap sockets by hand.
Or use air
If you already own a compressor, an air impact is lighter and cheaper; see the best air compressor for an impact wrench.
Wear eye protection with every air tool, use impact-rated sockets on impact wrenches, disconnect the air line before changing accessories, and finish lug nuts with a torque wrench to the vehicle's spec. See OSHA eye and face protection. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much torque do I need to remove lug nuts?
For cars, a wrench with 300 to 500 ft-lb of breakaway torque usually removes lug nuts that are not seized. For trucks and rusted nuts, 700 ft-lb or more helps.
Should I tighten lug nuts with an impact wrench?
Only snug them. Finish with a torque wrench to your vehicle’s specification, in a star pattern. Overtightening can stretch or break wheel studs.
Is 1/2 inch drive right for lug nuts?
Yes. 1/2 in is the standard size for lug nut sockets on cars and light trucks.
Are 1,500 ft-lb budget impact wrenches real?
The figures are the sellers’ own breakaway claims and cannot be compared directly with brands that state both fastening and breakaway torque. Treat them as upper limits.
Do I need impact sockets?
Yes. Impact sockets are made from tougher steel and are built to take hammering; chrome sockets can crack under an impact wrench.
