How we scored them
Each meter is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A stated UL listing or CAT rating earns safety points; a CAT rating on the leads only earns part.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fluke 88V Deluxe | 9.6 | 34 | 24 | 15 | 0 | 5 |
| Innova 3320 | 9.6 | 27 | 20 | 22 | 7 | 2 |

| AstroAI AM33D | 9.5 | 23 | 19 | 24 | 0 | 4 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 multimeter listings. Most gave voltage and current ranges, but few gave input impedance, which matters on car electronics. CAT ratings appeared on some but not all, and warranty terms ranged from 1 year to limited lifetime.
Buying guide: automotive multimeters
Functions you will use
DC voltage, resistance and continuity cover batteries, charging and wiring. Duty cycle and frequency test solenoids and sensors. Pulse width checks injectors. RPM and dwell help on older engines.
10 megohm input
A high input impedance means the meter draws almost no current from the circuit, so it will not upset or damage sensitive computer circuits. Fluke and Innova state it here.
Auto-ranging and counts
Auto-ranging saves dialing in a range. A 6,000 count display shows more digits than 2,000, useful for small voltage drops.
Safety ratings
Car circuits are low voltage, but if you also test household outlets, pick a meter rated CAT III 600V or higher.
Pair it with a scanner
An OBD2 scanner tells you which circuit has a fault; the meter tells you why.
Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a car battery read on a multimeter?
A fully charged 12V battery at rest reads about 12.6 V. With the engine running, charging voltage is typically about 13.8 to 14.7 V.
Do I need a special automotive multimeter?
For batteries, fuses and wiring, any decent meter works. For sensors, injectors and ignition, automotive functions such as duty cycle, pulse width and RPM help.
Is a 10 megohm input important?
Yes for computer-controlled circuits. Low impedance meters can load a sensor circuit and give false readings.
Can I check an alternator with a multimeter?
Yes. Measure battery voltage with the engine off, then running. A rise to roughly 13.8 to 14.7 V suggests it is charging. The Innova 3340 also tests alternator diodes.
What is TRMS?
True RMS reads AC voltage and current accurately even when the waveform is not a clean sine wave. It matters more for household and inverter circuits than for DC car work.
