The smog check is due next month and the check engine light just came on: that is the worst order for those two events. The best obd2 scanner for smog check reads the I/M readiness monitors and the fault codes behind that light, so you fix the car before the inspection tells you it failed. We compared five scanners on readiness checks, code lookup, live data and warranty, from the listings themselves.

How we scored them

Each scanner is scored on performance, build, value, safety and warranty. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing.

Product Shop Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
AERMOTOR V410 9.5 30 20 21 0 3
Autel MaxiLink ML519 9.5 32 20 21 0 3

OBDEXPERT V519 9.5 29 19 20 0 3
mucar CDL20 9.4 28 18 20 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

What the listings tell you

We read five OBD2 scanner listings. All five state I/M readiness, and three of them call it a one-click check. All five state DTC lookup; three put a number on the library: 35,901 on the OBDEXPERT, 10,000+ on the V410 and thousands of tips on the ML519. Two state a battery or voltage check. Three state a warranty term outright, one more states lifetime technical support, and one states no term at all. None names a safety certification.

best obd2 scanner for smog check: buying guide

I/M readiness: the smog check button

Three listings put the smog check on one button. The Autel ML519, the Autel AL519 and the AERMOTOR V410 all state a patented one-click I/M readiness check: plug in, press, and the screen says whether the monitors read Complete or Not Ready. The mucar and the OBDEXPERT list I/M readiness among their functions without the one-click claim. For a scanner bought for smog prep, the one-click versions are the point of the tool.

Read the code, fix the car, then clear

Two listings say the quiet part out loud. The mucar listing warns that clearing a code without repairing the car leaves the fault in place, and the V410 says codes cannot be erased if hardware problems persist. Both listings agree on the order: repair first, clear second, and the V410 adds drive cycles and a recheck before the inspection. Read the code, fix the cause, drive the car, then check readiness again.

Live data and freeze frame

All five state live data. The ML519 shows live data of multiple sensors in graph; the AL519 shows it in text and graph; the V410 shows graphic live data with RPM, speed, coolant temp and fuel status; the OBDEXPERT monitors a live data stream; the mucar lists live data too. Freeze frame shows the operating parameters when a code set, per the AL519, V410 and OBDEXPERT listings. For a light that comes and goes, live data is what finds it.

DTC lookup: how big is the library

The OBDEXPERT states 35,901 built-in code definitions, the V410 states 10,000+ DTCs, and the ML519 states thousands of troubleshooter tips. The AL519 and mucar state lookup without a number. A bigger stated library means fewer codes you have to look up elsewhere, which is the whole point of the feature.

Compatibility: check the year first

The ML519 covers post-1996 US cars, post-2006 EU and post-2009 Asia. The AL519 carries a warning in its own bullets: it works only for cars of 2015 or before, so check compatibility before buying. The mucar works on 1996 and newer US vehicles; the V410 on all OBDII vehicles; the OBDEXPERT on 1996+ US, 2000+ EU and Asian cars with a 16-pin port. Match the listing to your car’s year before anything else.

Power, cables and screens

Four listings say no battery or app is needed: the ML519, the mucar, the V410 and the OBDEXPERT all draw power from the OBD2 port. The AL519 spec table says battery powered, while its bullets never mention a battery, so that listing leaves it unclear. The ML519 lists a 24 in+ cable so you can sit in the seat while scanning; the V410 lists a 2.5-ft cable. Stated screens run 2.4 in on the AL519 to 2.8 in backlit on the V410 and OBDEXPERT.

Warranty in writing

The V410 states a 3-year warranty plus lifetime technical support, the longest term here. The ML519 states 1 year in its bullets while its table says a 365-day WEYLAND warranty, the same term under a different name. The AL519 states 12 months and the OBDEXPERT 1 year. The mucar states no warranty term. On a tool you may use twice a year, a longer stated term is worth having.

Garage Fit Check

  • The OBD2 port is usually under the dash; the ML519 lists a 24 in+ cable and the V410 a 2.5-ft cable, so you can sit in the driver’s seat while you scan.
  • Four of the five draw power from the port with no batteries or apps; the AL519 table says battery powered, so check what it ships with before the first job.
  • The V410 and OBDEXPERT are compact enough for the glovebox per their listings; the ML519’s thick rubber case is built for drops.
  • Before the smog check: run the I/M readiness check the listing describes, repair the root cause first, and recheck after the fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an OBD2 scanner make my car pass a smog check?

No. It reads the readiness monitors and the fault codes; the car passes when the underlying problem is repaired. The V410 shows Complete or Not Ready per monitor, and both it and the mucar listing say to repair the root cause before clearing codes. Use the scanner to find the problem, fix it, then verify readiness.

What does “Not Ready” mean on a scanner?

It means that monitor has not completed its checks yet. The V410 listing says to follow the on-screen prompts to finish drive cycles, then recheck before the inspection. A car with monitors Not Ready will not pass, even with no codes stored.

Why will the AL519 not work on a newer car?

Its own bullets say it works only for cars of 2015 or before, and tell you to check compatibility first. If your car is newer than that, pick one of the other four, whose listings cover 1996 and newer vehicles.

Should I clear codes right before the smog check?

No. The mucar listing warns that clearing without repair leaves the fault in place, and the V410 says codes cannot be erased while hardware problems persist. Clear only after the repair, then drive and recheck readiness.

Do these scanners need batteries?

Four do not: the ML519, mucar, V410 and OBDEXPERT listings all say they draw power from the OBD2 port with no batteries or apps. The AL519 spec table says battery powered, though its bullets never mention a battery, so confirm before you buy.
