The garage has room for one lift, and the driveway holds a car with tired brakes while the bike in the corner needs its chain and forks serviced. Car lift vs motorcycle lift: which one should you buy? Buy a car lift when the work is underbody service on a car or truck, and buy a motorcycle lift when the work is wheels, forks, chain and engine service on a bike. A car lift raises the whole vehicle so you can work underneath it; a motorcycle lift raises one bike on a small steel deck so you can work around it. The four lifts featured below are all motorcycle scissor lifts, ranked from the most capable to the least for the home garage.

Below: what each lift type does, a side-by-side comparison, four motorcycle lifts ranked with their stated specs, lift safety basics, and answers to common questions.

Car lift vs motorcycle lift: what each one does

A car lift is shop equipment: two posts with swing arms that pick it up by the frame, or two runways that carry it by the wheels, and raise the whole vehicle. A two-post lift bolts to a concrete slab while a runway lift sits on the slab, anchored only as its maker directs. Both run on powered hydraulics and need the ceiling height and concrete thickness their maker specifies. It is the right tool for oil changes, brake jobs, exhaust work, tire rotations and anything else done from underneath.

A motorcycle lift is a different animal. The four below are scissor jacks: a steel X-frame with a flat deck that slides under the bike’s engine, then cranks up by hand with a T-handle, ratchet or socket. Capacities run 1100 to 1200 lb, lift heights top out at 15 in, and all but the Donext state a mechanical lock, lock holes, security pins or a locking pin, to set before you start work. They are free-standing, fold down for storage, and live in the corner of the garage until bike day.

The short version: if the vehicle has four wheels and the job is underneath it, that is car lift territory. If the machine is a bike, ATV or dirt bike and the job is wheels, forks, chain, brakes or engine service at a comfortable height, a motorcycle lift is the tool. One does not substitute for the other.

Power Powered hydraulics on a dedicated circuit Hand crank: T-handle, ratchet or socket drive
Anchoring Two-post bolted to slab; runway sits on it Free-standing on the garage floor
Best for Underbody work: oil, brakes, exhaust, tires Wheels, forks, chain and engine service on bikes

Specifications are manufacturer rated, as published on each listing and collected 22 October 2026. Where a listing contradicts itself, the title and bullets win over the spec table.

The gear: four motorcycle lifts, ranked

All four lifts below are hand-crank motorcycle scissor lifts, ranked from the most capable to the least on stated capacity, lift height, locking, build and extras.

VEVOR 1200-lb Motorcycle Scissor Lift

The top pick pairs the highest capacity here, 1200 lb, with the tallest lift, 4.1 to 15 in, and the most complete drive kit: an upgraded ratchet and crank handles plus a socket wrench. The X-shaped steel frame carries a 14.2 x 8.7 in deck with deepened anti-slip rubber stripes, and six-hole security pins lock the height. It weighs 32.4 lb and measures 16.54 x 9.45 x 4.13 in.

The listing suits it to motorcycles, touring bikes and cruisers, plus ATVs and dirt bikes. Nothing about a warranty is stated. For the home garage that services big cruisers and touring bikes, the extra capacity and height earn the top slot.

Donext 1200-lb Motorcycle Scissor Lift

The runner-up matches the 1200 lb capacity with a 3 1/2 to 14 3/4 in lift range and one of the widest decks here, 9.06 x 14.57 in, with a rubber pad to stop slipping. A 7/8 socket and crank handle drive the screw, the frame is alloy steel with a black powder finish the maker calls oil-resistant, grease-resistant and dirt-resistant, and it weighs 13.49 kg at 14.57 x 9.06 x 3.54 in.

Note the spec table lists maximum lifting height as 14.76 in while the bullets say 14 3/4 in; the bullets win. No warranty term is stated. It gives up a little height to the VEVOR but brings the same capacity in a lighter, wide-deck package.

VEVOR 1100-lb Motorcycle Scissor Lift

Third place goes to the smaller VEVOR: 1100 lb capacity, listed as 1100 lb / 499 kg, with a 3.74 to 13.38 in lift range, also given as 95 to 340 mm. A 22 mm hex socket wrench drives it, a locking pin secures the height, and the 14.56 x 9.05 in platform has a textured non-slip surface. It weighs 29.3 lb, measures 16.77 x 9.65 x 3.74 in, folds to 3.74 in for storage, and comes in blue and black with a Q235B steel frame.

The maker suits it to street bikes, cruisers and adventure touring motorcycles. No warranty term is stated. It folds flat to 3.74 in for storage, but the lower capacity and shorter lift put it behind the two 1200 lb models.

Orion Motor Tech 1100-lb Motorcycle Scissor Lift

The Orion Motor Tech jack closes the ranking with 1100 lb capacity, a 9.1 x 14.6 in deck, and 5 lock holes with a safety bar for the mechanical lock. It cranks with a T-handle or a 3/8 in socket, and the box adds gloves, a chain brush and instructions. The frame is 1045 carbon steel with plug welding and a double crossbar, it weighs 28.4 lb, and the maker lists a 1 YEAR warranty, the only stated warranty in this group.

Watch the listing contradiction: the title and bullets promise a 3.7 to 14.6 in lift, but the spec table lists 13.8 in maximum and 4 in minimum; the title and bullets win. The stated warranty is a plus, but the contradiction and the lower capacity keep it fourth.

Lift safety

Check the lift's rated capacity against your heaviest vehicle, and its ceiling and concrete requirements (thickness and strength) before you buy. Install it exactly as the manufacturer specifies, use the mechanical locks before you go under, and look for ALI certification on the model. See the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI). Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Lift safety basics

Every lift here raises a bike you will put your hands and sometimes your body next to, so the safety habits matter more than the specs. Always engage the mechanical lock where the lift provides one, the lock holes, security pins or locking pin, before working; a scissor jack held up by its screw alone is not a work position. Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack: use rated stands on solid, level ground, follow the owner’s manual lift points, and for a full-size car lift, meet the maker’s concrete and ceiling requirements. Keep the deck’s rubber or anti-slip surface clean, center the bike on the platform, and if a lift ever drifts down with the lock engaged, stop using it until you know why.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a motorcycle lift to lift a car?

No. These lifts are rated 1100 to 1200 lb for one bike, with a deck sized for a motorcycle engine, not a car chassis. Lifting a car needs a car lift; see floor jack vs car lift for the smaller end of that range.

Can a car lift handle a motorcycle?

A car lift is built around cars: its posts, arms or runways are spaced for four wheels and a car body. For routine bike work, wheels, forks, chain and engine service, a motorcycle lift like the four above puts the bike at a comfortable height without tying up the car lift. Our car lifts hub covers the car side.

How high do these motorcycle lifts go?

Maximum lift heights run 13.38 in on the smaller VEVOR to 15 in on the larger VEVOR, with the Donext at 14 3/4 in and the Orion Motor Tech listing 3.7 to 14.6 in in its title and bullets. That is wheel-off-the-ground height for service, not stand-under height.

What keeps the bike from falling off the lift?

The mechanical lock: 5 lock holes with a safety bar on the Orion Motor Tech, six-hole security pins on the larger VEVOR, and a locking pin on the smaller VEVOR. Crank the bike up, engage the lock, and only then start work. The rubber or textured deck surfaces on all four resist slipping during the lift.

Do any of these lifts include a warranty?

Only one: the Orion Motor Tech listing states a 1 YEAR manufacturer warranty. The two VEVOR listings and the Donext listing state no warranty term.
