How we scored them

Each socket is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on the How We Pick page. The two LEXIVON sockets state ANSI compliance and carry a stated lifetime warranty; the GEARWRENCH states a standard limited lifetime warranty. WORKPRO and CASOMAN state no warranty term and no standard.

WORKPRO 5/8 Swivel 9.5 28 20 20 3 0
CASOMAN CS072 9.4 27 19 19 3 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

What the listings tell you

A read of the five listings shows a tight category. All five are 5/8 in sockets on a 3/8 in drive with a magnetic core and a swivel design. Lengths run 6 in, 8 in and 10 in. Two state a 6-point design and one a 12-point design; the two LEXIVON listings do not state a point count. Three state a lifetime warranty term; two state none. Two listings contradict themselves: the LEXIVON LX-122 spec table describes a torque wrench, and the CASOMAN spec table lists an 11-inch style against an 8-inch title.

Buying guide: the best 5/8 magnetic spark plug socket for your garage

Swivel action for tight plug wells

Every socket in this guide swivels. The LEXIVON, WORKPRO and CASOMAN listings state 360-degree action, and GEARWRENCH says its swivel design provides better access to hard to reach spark plugs. The magnet holds the plug on the socket while it snakes in and out of the well.

For plugs buried under a cowl or beside suspension hardware, the 360-degree swivel earns its keep. For plugs out in the open on an older four-cylinder, swivel still helps on the angle. None of these five is a fixed socket, so the rest of the spec decides: length, point count and build.

Magnetic core, and the rubber insert question

All five use a magnetic core or insert to retain the plug. LEXIVON says its magnetic core effectively retains spark plugs and minimizes damage. WORKPRO says its magnetic core retains and protects the spark plug for easier installation, helps prevent losing the plug over time, and minimizes damage. CASOMAN says its interior magnetic head design retains the spark plug, protects against wear, and allows for easy installation.

GEARWRENCH adds a second approach: a rubber insert that protects the spark plug and centers the socket. A magnet grips the steel shell of the plug; rubber grips the porcelain and helps center the socket on the way down. Neither listing claims one method beats the other.

Length: 6, 8 or 10 inches

The LEXIVON LX-121 and the GEARWRENCH run 6 in total length. The WORKPRO and CASOMAN run 8 in. The LEXIVON LX-122 runs 10 in, the most reach in this guide. Longer reaches deeper plug wells and clears tall valve covers; shorter keeps the ratchet closer to the work and feels more direct in open bays.

Match the length to the plug well, not the ratchet. One caution: the CASOMAN spec table lists a 5/8 in x 11-inch style, while the title, bullets and item length all say 8 inches; the title wins.

6-point or 12-point

The GEARWRENCH and CASOMAN listings state a 6-point design. The WORKPRO listing states a 12-point design that grips the flat sides of the fastener head, not the corners, to prevent round-off. GEARWRENCH takes a different route to the same goal with an off-corner loading design that reduces fastener rounding. The two LEXIVON listings do not state a point count.

A 6-point socket contacts more of each flat; a 12-point seats at more angles. For spark plugs, either works; the anti-rounding features matter more than the count. See spark plug socket magnetic vs rubber for more on how these sockets hold the plug.

Thin wall, finish and grip

The LEXIVON and WORKPRO listings state a thin wall design, which matters when the plug tube leaves little clearance around the socket. Finishes run chrome across the board: LEXIVON’s fully polished chrome plated mirror finish resists corrosion and is easy to clean; WORKPRO’s chrome-plated mirror finish resists rust and corrosion; CASOMAN’s corrosion-resistant mirror chrome finish. Hardened and heat-treated Cr-V or chrome alloy steel is the stated material on four of the five.

Knurling shows up on three listings: a knurled shaft that prevents slipping on the LEXIVON sockets, a knurled grip on the WORKPRO, and a contoured knurled grip on the CASOMAN. LEXIVON laser-etches the size for identification. Pair the socket with a torque wrench for spark plugs when the job calls for a set torque.

Warranty and standards

Three of the five state a lifetime warranty term: the two LEXIVON sockets state a lifetime limited warranty, and the GEARWRENCH states a standard limited lifetime warranty. The WORKPRO and CASOMAN listings state no warranty term. On standards, the two LEXIVON listings state they meet and exceed ANSI; no other listing states a standard. A stated standard and a stated warranty do not make a socket better, but they make the listing more complete, which is what the score rewards.

Garage Fit Check

  • Check the drive size before the first job: every pick here is 3/8 in drive, made for a 3/8 in square drive tool.
  • Confirm 5/8 in matches the plug; the LEXIVON listings laser-etch the size on the socket for identification.
  • Pick the length for the plug well: 6 in, 8 in or 10 in total length across the five picks.
  • Reach for a thin-wall socket, the LEXIVON or WORKPRO picks, where the plug tube leaves little clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are spark plug sockets magnetic?

These five are. Each uses a magnetic core or insert that retains the spark plug for removal and installation, and several listings say the magnet minimizes damage to the plug.

What size socket fits a spark plug?

All five picks here are 5/8 in sockets, the common size for many plugs. The WORKPRO listing also gives an inner diameter of 11.3 mm, or 0.44 inches, for checking fit against the plug.

Do I need a spark plug socket, or will a deep socket work?

A regular deep socket can turn a plug, but it has nothing to hold it. These sockets add a magnetic core that retains the plug and, on the GEARWRENCH, a rubber insert that protects and centers it.

What does the swivel do on a spark plug socket?

The swivel lets the drive end angle away from the socket end, so the ratchet clears obstructions around the plug well. The LEXIVON, WORKPRO and CASOMAN listings state 360-degree swivel action.

Is a 12-point spark plug socket okay?

Yes. The WORKPRO is a 12-point design that the listing says grips the flat sides of the fastener head, not the corners, to prevent round-off. The GEARWRENCH and CASOMAN are 6-point designs.
