How the points were given

The Shop Score weighs performance (scale, range and readability), build (casing and dial), value for the stated specs, safety and warranty. For a tread depth gauge, safety means a stated certification or safety listing: none of the five listings states one, so safety scores zero across the group. Three of the five state a warranty term: two state a 1-year term and one states a 90 Day Limited Warranty. How we pick explains the weights.

Product Shop Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
SAFELIFE 10-Pack Gauge 9.6 30 21 24 0 3

LUMITECO 4-Pack Gauge 9.5 32 21 22 0 0
WNCGC GL-1705-1 Gauge 9.5 30 21 20 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

How to choose the best dial type tread depth gauge

Read the scale: 32nds and color zones

All five gauges read in 1/32-inch increments, so any of them speaks the same scale as a tire shop. The Steelman and the LUMITECO also mark 1/128-inch increments for finer readings. Four of the five name their zone colors: green for ample tread, yellow for marginal or wearing tread, and red for tread so low the tire needs replacing. The GODESON lists colorful zones without naming the colors, so read its dial face rather than relying on a color key.

Single gauge or a pack

The SAFELIFE comes as a 10-pack and the LUMITECO as a 4-pack, while the GODESON, Steelman and WNCGC are single gauges. A pack suits a shop that checks many vehicles or a household with several cars, while a single gauge suits one toolbox. Storage differs too: the LUMITECO 4-pack comes with a leather pouch, and the SAFELIFE 10-pack and the WNCGC come with a cloth bag.

Check the range and the fine print

The Steelman measures tread from 0-14/32-inch and the LUMITECO lists a 14/32-inch maximum; the other three state no reading range, so do not assume one. Listings can also disagree with themselves: the Steelman bullets give 2.38 x 2.09 x 0.73 inches while its spec table gives 3.5 x 3.25 x 1.06 inches, and the GODESON and WNCGC bullets claim a solid zinc casting body while their spec tables list stainless steel and alloy steel. Trust the bullets, as this article does. See the diagnostics and electrical guides for more shop measuring tools.

Garage Fit Check

  • Pocket-size tools: the GODESON measures 2.4 x 2.2 x 0.59 inches and the WNCGC measures 2.4 x 2 x 0.67 inches, so either fits a small drawer or a pocket.
  • No power source is stated for any of these dial gauges, so there is no charger or battery to plan for.
  • Storage: the LUMITECO 4-pack comes with a leather pouch, and the SAFELIFE 10-pack and the WNCGC come with a cloth bag.
  • Before the first job, check the scale: all five read in 1/32-inch increments, and the Steelman and LUMITECO also mark 1/128-inch increments.
  • Check the zone colors: the Steelman, SAFELIFE, LUMITECO and WNCGC name green, yellow and red zones; the GODESON names colorful zones without naming the colors.

FAQ: garage tools

What is a tread depth gauge?

A tread depth gauge measures how much tread is left on a tire. The dial gauges here read in 1/32-inch increments, and several add color zones for a quick read.

How do you read a dial tread depth gauge?

Place the probe in the tread and read the dial face: the Steelman face is marked in 1/32-inch increments with 1/128-inch marks, and the LUMITECO holds its reading on the dial after the measurement.

What do the green, yellow and red zones mean?

Green means ample tread, yellow means marginal tread or tread starting to wear, and red means the tread is low and the tire needs replacing, per the SAFELIFE, Steelman, LUMITECO and WNCGC listings.

Do these gauges work on motorcycles, cars, trucks and buses?

The GODESON, SAFELIFE and WNCGC listings name motorcycle, car, truck and bus use, and the LUMITECO adds trailers, semi trucks and RVs.

Which gauge comes in a multi-pack?

The SAFELIFE comes as a 10-pack and the LUMITECO as a 4-pack; the GODESON, Steelman and WNCGC are single gauges.
