The check-engine light is on in the diesel truck, and the dealer wants a diagnostic fee just to read the code. A heavy-duty OBD2 scanner reads the codes, shows live data and clears the light, in the yard instead of the shop. This guide to the best OBD2 scanner for diesel trucks under 200 covers five heavy-duty scanners for Cummins, Detroit, Paccar and more. We compared them on protocols, coverage, features and warranties, using only what the listings state. Every number below comes straight from the listings. Pick the scanner that fits the truck.

How we scored them
Each scanner is scored on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, using only what the listing publishes. The weights are on our How We Pick page.

Buying guide: the best OBD2 scanner for diesel trucks under 200
Protocols: J1939, J1708 and J1587
Heavy-duty trucks speak different protocols than cars. The ANCEL HD601 lists SAE J1939 and SAE J1708, the standard heavy-duty protocols, and fits Cummins, Paccar, Detroit, Caterpillar, Freightliner, International and Peterbilt in Class 4 to Class 8 trucks. The KZYEE KC601 lists J1939, J1708 and J1587 with 6-pin and 9-pin diesel adapters. The FOXWELL HD301 lists J1939, J1708, J1587 and OBDII with 6, 9 and 16-pin connectors. The ANCEL HD100 lists J1939. The HUMZOR NC610 combines OBDII 16-pin and 9-pin for cars and trucks. Match the scanner to the truck’s protocol; the HD601 notes it does not support J1850 PWM or J1850 VPW, so older trucks on those protocols need a different tool. When the protocol matches, the scanner talks; when it does not, no feature list helps. The FOXWELL’s four-protocol coverage is the widest net here for a mixed fleet.
What it can do
All five read and clear fault codes and show live data. The differences are in the extras. The ANCEL HD100 does parked DPF regeneration for Cummins and Caterpillar, plus DPF reset and aftertreatment diagnostics through its app. The ANCEL HD601 is explicit about what it does not do: no ABS bleeding, no DPF regeneration, no ECU programming and no bi-directional active commands. It focuses on code reading and clearing, real-time data and DTC library lookup. The KZYEE KC601 and FOXWELL HD301 cover engine, transmission, ABS and more systems with live data. Buy the capability the truck needs, not the longest feature list: a DPF regen you will never run is dead weight in the price. The HUMZOR NC610 adds freeze frames, I/M readiness and a 50000+ DTC lookup with data shown in text and graphs.
Voltage: 12V and 24V
Heavy trucks run 24V electrical systems, and not every scanner handles both. The ANCEL HD601 lists 12V and 24V commercial vehicle support. The others do not state voltage. If the fleet includes both pickups and Class 8 trucks, the dual-voltage listing matters. For a 12V pickup alone, any of the five that lists the right protocol works, and the cheaper single-voltage tools do the job. The dual-voltage listing matters most when the fleet mixes pickups and Class 8 trucks.
Updates and warranty
Four of the five list lifetime free updates: the ANCEL HD601, the KZYEE KC601, the ANCEL HD100 and the FOXWELL HD301. No subscription fees, no annual renewals. The HUMZOR NC610 does not state updates. On warranties, the ANCEL HD601 lists 1 year warranty service with 30-day free return, the KZYEE KC601 lists a 1 Year Manufacturer warranty, the ANCEL HD100 lists a 1 Year warranty, and the FOXWELL HD301 lists a 1 year warranty. The HUMZOR NC610 gives no term in years or months. A scanner is a long-term tool that should outlast the truck’s next three services; the warranty and the update policy decide how long it stays useful. The HD601’s updates come over the internet in English and Spanish.
Connectors, screens and power
The connector set decides which trucks the scanner plugs into. The ANCEL HD601 ships with 6, 9 and 16 pin cables; the KZYEE KC601 includes 6-pin and 9-pin diesel adapters plus the standard 16-pin connection and a storage case; the FOXWELL HD301 includes 6-pin and 9-pin adapters with a built-in 16-pin connector, a USB cable and a manual. The ANCEL HD100 plugs into a 9-pin or 16-pin port and talks to a phone over Bluetooth, so the phone is the screen and the dongle needs no battery. The HUMZOR NC610 comes with a 9-pin connector and a portable tool box. On screens, the HD601, KC601, NC610 and HD301 all list 2.8 in displays; the NC610 adds three fault indicator lights so the vehicle status reads at a glance. Power is simple across the board: the HD100 and NC610 draw from the vehicle port with no battery to charge, and the HD301 is plug-and-play with no WiFi, batteries or app setup. Check the truck diagnostic port before ordering, because the wrong connector ends the job before it starts.
Compatibility gotchas: check before you buy
Every listing here names trucks it does not fit, and those exclusions matter more than the compatibility lists. The ANCEL HD100 states it is not for pickup trucks, and its DPF regen covers Cummins and Caterpillar only, including selected Caterpillar excavators, wheel loaders, dozers and backhoe loaders. The HUMZOR NC610 is not compatible with Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Cascadia or Volvo VNL models, nor with 6-pin connectors or the 1708 protocol. The ANCEL HD601 does not support J1850 PWM or J1850 VPW, so certain older trucks are out. The KZYEE KC601 invites buyers to send vehicle details for a compatibility check before ordering, which is the safest move with any of these. On languages, the NC610 supports 8, English, German, Polish, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian and Chinese, while the HD301 lists Spanish and English and the HD601 updates in English and Spanish. Match the protocol, the connector and the exclusion list to the truck in the driveway, in that order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will these scanners work on my pickup truck?
The ANCEL HD601 supports engine diagnosis on cars, minivans, light trucks and pickups alongside heavy trucks. The FOXWELL HD301 includes a 16-pin OBDII connector for cars. The HUMZOR NC610 combines OBDII 16-pin and 9-pin. Check the listing’s vehicle list before buying.
Can they do a DPF regeneration?
The ANCEL HD100 lists parked DPF regeneration for Cummins and Caterpillar, plus DPF reset. The ANCEL HD601 explicitly does not support DPF regeneration, ABS bleeding, ECU programming or bi-directional controls. The others do not state regen functions.
Do they work on 24V trucks?
The ANCEL HD601 lists 12V and 24V commercial vehicle support. The other listings do not state voltage. For a 24V Class 8 truck, the dual-voltage listing is the safe pick.
Are software updates free?
The ANCEL HD601, KZYEE KC601, ANCEL HD100 and FOXWELL HD301 all list lifetime free updates with no recurring fees. The HUMZOR NC610 does not state an update policy.
What is the difference between J1939 and OBDII?
J1939 is the heavy-duty truck protocol, running over 6-pin and 9-pin connectors on 24V systems; OBDII is the car and light-truck protocol on the 16-pin connector. The FOXWELL HD301 and HUMZOR NC610 cover both, with 6, 9 and 16-pin connectors. The ANCEL HD601 covers J1939 and J1708 for heavy trucks plus cars. Buy the protocol the vehicle speaks.
Do I need the 6-pin and 9-pin adapters?
Older heavy trucks use 6-pin and 9-pin Deutsch connectors instead of the 16-pin OBDII port. The KZYEE KC601 includes 6-pin and 9-pin adapters in the box, and the FOXWELL HD301 includes 6, 9 and 16-pin. If the truck predates the 16-pin port, the adapters are not optional.
