The DPF light is on, the truck is derating, and the shop wants it for a week. The best obd2 scanner for diesel trucks is the one that runs a forced regen in your own yard and reads the whole truck, not just the engine. The five heavy-duty scanners below all do full-system diagnostics; four state DPF regeneration. Every figure here comes from the listings.

How we scored them

Each scanner is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, using only what the listing publishes. The weights are on our How We Pick page. Safety does not apply to scanners; warranties are the terms the listings state.

Product Shop Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5

Nexas NL102P 9.5 28 20 19 0 3

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

What the listings tell you

DPF regeneration is the headline function and four of the five state it: the NEXAS lists parking, driving and onboard regen; the LAUNCH CRP129HD lists forced regen, DPF reset and DPD/DPR functions; the ANCEL HD430 lists DPF reset and forced regeneration for Cummins and Caterpillar; the ANCEL X7HD lists DPF regeneration among 40-plus resets. The LAUNCH CR HD V2 states no DPF function: it is a full-system reader without regen. All five cover the standard heavy-duty protocols, J1939 and J1708, with the LAUNCH models and ANCEL HD430 adding J1587 and others.

Buying guide: best obd2 scanner for diesel trucks

DPF regen: which trucks

Regen support is engine-specific in the listings. The NEXAS names Cummins, Detroit, Maxxforce, Hino and ISUZU; the HD430 names Cummins and Caterpillar and warns it is not for pickups or light trucks; the CRP129HD names Cummins, Detroit and Paccar among 50-plus truck brands; the X7HD names Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack, International, Detroit and Cummins-powered trucks. Every listing says functions vary by model: send your year, make, model and engine before buying for a specific regen.

Connectors and protocols

Heavy trucks do not all use the 16-pin OBD2 port. The NEXAS includes 6-pin, 9-pin and 16-pin connectors; the CRP129HD includes CAT 9-pin, 6-pin and Type II 9-pin adapters; the CR HD V2 includes 6-pin, 9-pin, CT 9-pin and 16-pin adapters; the HD430 supports 12V and 24V trucks with CAT-9, diesel 6-pin and 9-pin plus OBDII 16-pin. If your truck is pre-2007 or off-road equipment, the adapter kit is the part that matters.

Resets beyond DPF

The X7HD lists 40-plus resets including oil, injector coding, EPB, ABS, SRS, suspension and throttle, plus bi-directional control and ECU coding. The CRP129HD lists 7-plus: DPF, oil, injector coding, DEF check, speed limit, cylinder cutout and clutch relearn. The NEXAS lists oil reset and battery monitoring. The HD430 and CR HD V2 state no reset count beyond DPF on the HD430. Match the resets to the work you do: oil and injector coding are the common ones.

Updates, screens and warranty

Update policies: lifetime free on the CR HD V2 and HD430 (WiFi), 2 years free on the CRP129HD and X7HD. Screens run 2.8 inches (NEXAS, CR HD V2) to 4 inches (CRP129HD), 4.3 inches (HD430) and a 10.1-inch tablet (X7HD) with a 6000mAh battery. Warranties: 3-year service on the HD430, 2-year manufacturer on the NEXAS, 1-year on the CRP129HD, CR HD V2, and X7HD per its bullets (its spec table says 2 years; we follow the bullets).

More buying advice: engines, hardware and the fine print

Match the engine list. Heavy-duty coverage is engine-specific, so read the compatibility list before anything else. The NEXAS NL102P names Cummins, Detroit, Maxxforce, Hino and ISUZU for its DPF regen work. The LAUNCH CRP129HD names Cummins, Detroit and Paccar. The ANCEL HD430 names Cummins and Caterpillar. The LAUNCH CR HD V2 and the ANCEL X7HD speak in protocols rather than engine brands: HDOBD and OBD2 on the V2, HDOBD/OBD2 full-system on the X7HD. If your engine is not named, send the seller your truck’s year, make and engine.

Regen types differ. The NEXAS lists parking regen, driving regen and onboard regen plus DOC cleaning procedures, which is the full set for clearing DPF-related fault codes and restoring performance. The CRP129HD lists forced DPF regeneration, DPF reset and DPD/DPR functions. The HD430 lists DPF reset and forced regeneration. The X7HD lists DPF regen among its 40-plus resets. Forced regen is the one you want when the dash light will not clear on its own; driving regen needs the truck moving under load.

Handheld or tablet. The ANCEL X7HD is the outlier in form: a 10.1-inch tablet on Android with a 6000mAh battery, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, live data graphing, report printing, 14 languages and remote support. The others are handheld scanners. A tablet is easier to read under a truck and better for graphing two parameters at once, which the CR HD V2 also offers; a handheld is simpler to stash in the cab.

The pickup caveat. The ANCEL HD430 warns it is not for pickups or light trucks: on those it only does OBDII engine diagnostics with no DPF regen or heavy-duty functions. If your diesel is a pickup rather than a medium- or heavy-duty truck, confirm with the seller before buying any of these, since several are built for the HDOBD world, not the light-duty one.

Warranty fine print. The NEXAS states a 2-year manufacturer warranty, the longest here. The CRP129HD, CR HD V2 and HD430 state 1 year. The X7HD contradicts itself: 1 year in its bullets against 2 years in its spec table, so expect the bullets’ 1 year. None of these is a lifetime tool warranty; they are electronics with stated terms.

Garage safety

Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these work on my pickup truck?

Partly. The ANCEL HD430 warns it is not for pickups or light trucks: on those it only does OBDII engine diagnostics with no DPF regen or HD functions. The others support OBD2 for 1996-and-newer passenger vehicles; confirm with the seller.

What is a forced DPF regen?

A service procedure that burns soot out of the diesel particulate filter, run through the scanner. The NEXAS lists parking, driving and onboard regen types; the CRP129HD and HD430 list forced regen. Follow the listing’s instructions and the truck’s conditions.

Do I need bi-directional control?

Only the X7HD states it, for actively exercising components like injectors, ABS and throttle. For code reading and regens you do not need it; for diagnostic work it speeds up fault-finding.

Which protocols do these cover?

All five cover J1939 and J1708, the heavy-duty standards. The CRP129HD, CR HD V2 and HD430 add J1587, J1850 variants, ISO protocols and OBD2/CAN. Match the protocol to your truck’s year.

How long are updates free?

Lifetime free on the LAUNCH CR HD V2 and ANCEL HD430; 2 years free on the LAUNCH CRP129HD and ANCEL X7HD. The NEXAS title says free update with no period stated.
