Best Shop Vacuum for Home Garage: 5 Picks for Cleanup and Dust

Compare the picks

Peak HP is peak horsepower as each listing states it. Specifications are manufacturer rated, as published on each listing and collected 20 October 2026.

How we scored them

Each vacuum is scored on performance, build, value, safety and warranty. No listing here states an electrical safety listing, so every safety score is zero, and three of the five listings state no warranty term at all. The comparison table and the product cards show how each machine scored.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

Best shop vacuum for home garage: what the listings tell you

We compared five wet/dry vacuums, and every one states wet and dry pickup. Tank sizes run from 4.5 gallons in the bullets to 12 gallons stated, and peak power from 4 HP to 6 peak HP stated. Hose reach runs from 7 ft hoses on the three portable picks to a 20 ft hose on the DEWALT wall-mount and a 30 ft retractable hose on the Giraffe Tools wall-mount. Cords run 10 ft, 15 ft and 20 ft stated. Only two listings state a noise figure in db: 82 db and 65 db. One listing states a warranty term of 24 months, and four state no concrete term. Filters are cartridge, foam and HEPA across the picks, and every listing includes multiple nozzles.

Buying guide: picking a shop vacuum for the home garage

Tank size

The stated tanks are 4.5 gallons, 5 gallons, 6 gallons and 12 gallons. The 12 gallon Shop-Vac is the only one that states a built-in tank drain, so liquids empty without lifting the canister. The two wall-mount picks trade tank size for storage: the Giraffe Tools states 4.5 gallons in its bullets, the DEWALT DXV06G states 6 gallons. If your garage floods or you clean up sawdust by the barrel, the 12 gallon tank is the stated answer.

Peak horsepower

The listings state 4 HP, 4.5 peak HP, 5 peak HP and 6 peak HP. Peak horsepower is the maker’s peak claim, so compare the figures to each other rather than to any external standard. The 6 peak HP Shop-Vac 5761311 states the strongest figure here, and it pairs that with a stated 100 CFM blower.

Hose and cord reach

Reach decides how much of the garage and driveway you clean without moving the machine. The Giraffe Tools states a 30 ft retractable hose, the DEWALT DXV06G states a 1-7/8 in x 20 ft hose, and the three portable picks each state a 7 ft hose. The portable picks add stated cords of 10 ft, 15 ft and 20 ft, and the DEWALT STEALTHSONIC title states 17 ft of reach from its cord and hose together. Wall-mount picks assume the machine stays put and the hose does the traveling.

Noise

Only two listings state a db figure: 82 db on the DEWALT DXV06G and 65 db on the DEWALT STEALTHSONIC. The STEALTHSONIC also claims 50% quieter than previous models, and the Shop-Vac Whisper Series claims up to 60% quieter than standard models. If you vacuum early mornings or while the house is awake, the stated 65 db figure is the lowest concrete number here.

Bags and filters

The DEWALT STEALTHSONIC includes 6 disposable dust bags. The DEWALT DXV06G includes one disposable dust bag plus a cartridge filter and a foam filter. The Shop-Vac 5761311 and 5430542 both list a cartridge filter, a foam sleeve and a filter bag. The Giraffe Tools states a HEPA filter. Washable cartridge filters keep running costs down; bags keep emptying cleaner.

Wet pickup and blower

All five state wet and dry pickup. The DEWALT DXV06G adds a blower function to wet and dry, and the Shop-Vac 5761311 states a 100 CFM blower for leaves and patio mess. Foam sleeves and foam filters are stated for wet pickup on several picks, so check that the right filter is fitted before switching from dust to water.

Wall mount against portable

Two picks mount to the wall with remote control included: the DEWALT DXV06G with its remote control watch, and the Giraffe Tools with its remote control function. Three picks roll on casters for portable use, with weights stated at 16.9 lb, 18.7 lb and 22.9 lb. The Giraffe Tools states 60 lb and says a team lift is needed, so it is a mount-and-leave machine.

Garage Fit Check

• The two wall-mount picks include their brackets and screws; mount to a solid wall and leave room for the 20 ft and 30 ft hoses to unwind.
• The Giraffe Tools Grandstorm states 60 lb and needs a team lift; mount it before adding accessories.
• All five are corded 120 volts. The two DEWALT picks state 8 A and 9 A; plan your outlet so the stated cord length reaches the work.
• Only the Shop-Vac 5761311 states a built-in tank drain; the rest empty by lifting or detaching the tank.
• Store accessories where the listing keeps them: the accessory bag, the mesh or accessory bags, the on-board holders, or the cord wrap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a shop vacuum pick up water?

All five picks here state wet and dry pickup. The Shop-Vac 5761311 goes further with a stated built-in tank drain, and several picks state foam sleeves or foam filters for wet use. Fit the wet filter before switching from dust to water.

Do I need dust bags?

What does peak horsepower mean?

It is the peak power claim each listing states: 4 HP, 4.5 peak HP, 5 peak HP and 6 peak HP across these five. Compare the stated figures to each other, since the listings do not give a common standard beyond that.

Wall-mount or portable shop vacuum?

The DEWALT DXV06G and the Giraffe Tools Grandstorm state wall mounting with remote control included, which keeps the floor clear but fixes the machine in place. The three rolling picks state casters and weights from 16.9 lb to 22.9 lb, so they move to the car, the yard and the workbench.

How loud are these shop vacuums?

Two listings state a figure: 82 db and 65 db. The DEWALT STEALTHSONIC claims 50% quieter than previous models, and the Shop-Vac Whisper Series claims up to 60% quieter than standard models. The stated 65 db is the lowest concrete number here.
