This guide covers single vs dual lens borescope. Verdict: Choose a single lens borescope if you mostly inspect straight runs and want a simple phone scope with a full accessory kit. Choose a dual lens borescope if you need side views without repositioning. If you also want a standalone screen with no phone or app, the TGJOR example is the one here with a built-in screen.

A rattle inside an engine bay or a slow drain can hide its cause out of sight, and pulling parts apart to look is slow work. A borescope threads a small camera into the dark space and shows the problem on a screen. That is the question behind single vs dual lens borescope: whether one forward view is enough, or whether a side view earns its place.

Single vs dual lens borescope: how each side sees the job

A single lens looks forward down the pipe, drain or engine bay. That covers straight runs, and the side-view mirror in the Ditomil and Kinpthy kits gives an angled glance when needed. A dual lens adds a side view without pulling the probe out: the TGJOR example switches instantly between front and side views, while the Acoath example states dual lenses without describing switching.

Screen: phone or built in

Most examples here use a phone screen. The Kinpthy example connects only to iPhone and iPad devices with a Lightning port, while the Ditomil example adds Micro-USB and Type-C adapters and the Acoath example pairs with iOS 9.0+ and Android 7+. The TGJOR example skips the phone entirely with a 5-inch screen, no app and no Wi-Fi, powered by a 2000mAh battery for 3-4 hours.

Resolution and recording

The Kinpthy, Ditomil and Acoath examples state 1920×1440 resolution. The TGJOR example states 1080P with a 1.2-4 inch focus range and a 170° wide-angle view, but it cannot take pictures or videos, so its inspections are live-view only.

Cable, probe and waterproofing

All four examples use a semi-rigid cable that bends and holds its shape, stated at 16.4 ft on three examples, while the Kinpthy title and spec table say 16.3 ft and its bullets say 16.4 ft. The Kinpthy, Ditomil and Acoath examples state a 7.9 mm probe with 8 adjustable LED lights; the TGJOR example states 8 adjustable LEDs but no probe diameter. All four state IP67 waterproofing, and the Kinpthy and Acoath examples state underwater use up to 3.28 ft for 1 hour.

Heat and handling

The Acoath example states its probe is not made of heat-resistant materials and says to let an engine cool to a normal level before inspecting, and to avoid violent impacts, forceful cable pulls and sharp protrusions that can scratch the waterproof layer. The other examples state no heat rating, so the same cool-down caution is the safe approach when the target is hot.

Choose a single lens if

  • Your inspections are mostly straight-ahead looks into pipes, drains and engine bays
  • You already carry a phone and want the scope to use its screen
  • You want the accessory kit with magnet, hook and mirror for retrieving and side glances
  • You do not need to record side views

Choose a dual lens if

  • You need side views without pulling the probe out and re-aiming
  • You want a built-in screen and no phone or app, as on the TGJOR example
  • You inspect pipe walls and cylinder walls from the side
  • You want a stated warranty term, the 1 Year term on the TGJOR example

Garage Fit Check

  • Space: a semi-rigid cable reaches down drains and into engine bays while holding its shape around corners.
  • Power: phone scopes draw on the phone, while the TGJOR example runs 3-4 hours on its 2000mAh battery.
  • Storage: the kits include a magnet, hook, mirror and protective cap on the Kinpthy, Ditomil and Acoath examples; the TGJOR example states no accessory kit.
  • Check before the job: check the phone port before buying, since the Kinpthy example fits Lightning only, while the Ditomil example covers Type-C, Micro-USB and Lightning with adapters.

FAQ: garage tools

Is a dual lens borescope better than a single lens one?

It depends on the view you need. A dual lens adds side views: the TGJOR example switches between front and side views, while a single lens shows the forward view only. A single lens still covers straight runs, drains and engine bays, and the single examples here match the Acoath dual example at 1920×1440.

Do I need a phone to use a borescope?

Most examples here need a phone: the Kinpthy example works with iPhone and iPad over Lightning, while the Ditomil and Acoath examples work with iOS and Android over adapters or the app. The TGJOR example has a 5-inch screen and needs no phone, app or Wi-Fi.

Can a borescope go underwater?

The examples here state IP67 waterproofing, and the Kinpthy and Acoath examples state operation underwater up to 3.28 ft for 1 hour. The TGJOR example states IP67 waterproofing without a depth figure, so check its manual for depth limits.

Can I inspect a hot engine with a borescope?

Not with the Acoath example: its probe is not made of heat-resistant materials, and the listing says to let the engine cool to a normal level first. The other examples state no heat rating, so the same cool-down caution is the safe approach for them too.

Will a phone borescope work with my phone?

Check the port. The Kinpthy example works only with iPhone and iPad devices with a Lightning port, not Android or USB-C. The Ditomil example includes Type-C, Micro-USB and Lightning adapters, and the Acoath example pairs with iOS 9.0+ and Android 7+.
