How we scored them

Each drill is scored on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of the five listings states a UL, ETL or CSA listing, so all score zero on safety. Three state a clear warranty term: 3 years on the CRAFTSMAN kit and 2 years on each BLACK+DECKER.

Product Shop Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
CRAFTSMAN V20 Combo 9.6 32 21 21 0 3

DEKOPRO 20V Drill 9.4 28 19 20 0 0
COMOWARE 20V Drill 9.4 26 19 21 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

Best cordless drill: what the listings tell you

All five listings state a voltage and a lithium-ion battery. Four state a top speed in their bullets; the fifth lists two conflicting speeds in its spec table. Three state a warranty term; none states a safety listing. Torque is the messiest figure here: it arrives in in-lbs, N-m, UWO and once as “19 ksc”, so compare it only within the same unit and treat a missing or contradictory figure as unknown, not as zero.

Buying guide: your first cordless drill

Voltage and torque

Four of the five run on 20V packs; the BLACK+DECKER 12V MAX is the odd one out. Torque arrives in several units: the CRAFTSMAN impact driver states 1,460 in-lbs, the COMOWARE 266 in-lbs (30 Nm), the BLACK+DECKER 12V 26 N-m. The DEKOPRO table says 40 N-m in one line and 19 ksc in another, and the BLACK+DECKER 20V table says 3.5 N-m, which reads like a data error next to a 20V pack. Match the voltage to the job, compare torque only within the same unit, and treat a missing or contradictory figure as unknown.

Speed and clutch

Three drills list a two-speed gearbox: 0-350 and 0-1,500 RPM on the CRAFTSMAN drill, 0-350 and 0-1,300 on the COMOWARE, 0-350 and 0-1,350 on the DEKOPRO. The COMOWARE listing spells out the logic: low speed drives screws with control, high speed powers through holes. Clutch positions run 25+1, 18+1 and 11 on the two BLACK+DECKERs; per the COMOWARE listing, the clutch keeps a screw from sinking too deep, a head from stripping and a shaft from breaking.

Chuck and bits

The CRAFTSMAN drill takes a 1/2 in chuck, the COMOWARE a 3/8 in keyless metal chuck that tightens by hand, and both BLACK+DECKERs 10 mm. A bigger chuck takes bigger bits. Count what comes in the box too: the COMOWARE brings a large bit set and a storage case, the DEKOPRO 10 bits and a magnetic holder, the CRAFTSMAN two bits and a bag.

Battery and kit

The CRAFTSMAN kit is the only one with two batteries; the rest bring one. The COMOWARE pairs its 1500mAh pack with a fast charger and says to fully charge the battery on arrival, remove it from the drill between jobs and recharge every 3 months. The BLACK+DECKER 20V notes its pack reads 20V max and 18V nominal. One battery finishes a brake job; two finish a weekend.

Weight and size

Listed weights run 2.5 lb on the DEKOPRO and 2.8 lb on the BLACK+DECKER 12V, up to a 5.2 lb listed item weight on the COMOWARE. The CRAFTSMAN and the BLACK+DECKER 20V state no weight. The BLACK+DECKER 12V and the CRAFTSMAN both call out compact builds for tight spaces, and the CRAFTSMAN adds contoured over-molded handles.

Garage safety

Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Garage Fit Check

  • Open the box against the listing: the CRAFTSMAN kit should hold two tools, two batteries, a charger, a bag and two bits; the COMOWARE a case with its bit set.
  • Charge before the first job. The COMOWARE listing says to fully charge the battery on arrival.
  • Check the chuck against the bits you own: 1/2 in, 3/8 in and 10 mm all appear here.
  • Store batteries off the drill between jobs; the COMOWARE listing says to recharge every 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cordless drill?

A drill and driver that runs on a rechargeable battery pack instead of a cord. The five here use 12V or 20V lithium-ion packs, and each listing includes at least one battery and a charger. They drill holes and drive screws wherever the job is, no outlet needed.

How do I choose a cordless drill?

Match voltage and stated torque to your jobs, then check the clutch positions, the chuck size and what comes in the box. A kit with two batteries, a case and a bit set, like the CRAFTSMAN or COMOWARE, covers more weekends than a bare drill. Read the warranty line too: three of these five state a term.

What is the clutch for?

The clutch limits torque in steps: 25+1 on the COMOWARE, 18+1 on the DEKOPRO and 11 positions on the two BLACK+DECKERs. Per the COMOWARE listing, it keeps a screw from sinking too deep, a head from stripping and a shaft from breaking. Dial it down for small screws, up for big ones.

How do I keep the battery healthy?

Follow the one listing that says: fully charge the battery on arrival, remove it from the drill when the job is done, and recharge every 3 months during storage. The BLACK+DECKER 20V listing also notes its pack reads 20V max and 18V nominal, which is normal for the platform.

Can these drills handle masonry or concrete?

Not per these listings. The COMOWARE listing says plainly it is not intended for concrete, masonry or heavy-duty industrial jobs, and none of the other four claims masonry work either. These are wood, drywall, plastic and light-metal drills; rent the rotary hammer for the foundation.
