How we scored them
Each pair is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A named ASME PASE or ANSI/PALD compliance earns most of the safety points, a general ASME claim earns partial credit, and a CE claim earns a little.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 jack stand listings. All gave a capacity and height range, 8 named a safety standard or certification and 7 gave a clear warranty term, from 90 days to 2 years. Capacity is the trap: some rate the pair, some each stand, and a few give both figures.
Buying guide: jack stands
Capacity per stand or per pair
A “3 ton” pair may mean 3 tons for both stands together or 3 tons each. Check which, and pick stands rated well above the share of the vehicle they hold.
Height range
The minimum height must fit under your jacking points with the car lifted only a little; the maximum must reach high enough to get the wheels off the ground. Cars usually need 10 to 16 in, pickups 14 to 23 in.
Ratchet, pin or both
A ratchet locks automatically at each notch. A pin through the column is a second, independent lock. Stands with both give you a backup if a pawl does not seat.
Standards
ASME PASE (and its PALD part) is the US safety standard for portable automotive service equipment. On these listings it is the maker’s claim of compliance.
Using them
Lift with a floor jack, set the stands at the vehicle’s support points on solid, level concrete, lower the car onto them, then shake it firmly before going under. Never use bricks, blocks or the jack alone.
A jack is for lifting, not holding. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack: set it on rated jack stands, on solid, level ground, at the manufacturer's lift points, chock the wheels, and give the car a firm shake before you go under. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size jack stands do I need?
For most cars and crossovers, a 3 ton pair with a 10 to 16 in range. For full-size pickups and lifted SUVs, 6 ton stands that reach about 20 to 23 in.
Are jack stands rated per stand or per pair?
It depends on the brand. Some state the total for the pair, others for each stand. Read the listing carefully; this guide notes which applies.
Are pin-type or ratchet jack stands safer?
Both work when used correctly. Stands with a ratchet and a separate pin have two independent locks, which adds a margin if one is not fully engaged.
How many jack stands do I need?
At least two, under the same axle or side. Four stands let you lift the whole car level for transmission or exhaust work.
Where do I place jack stands?
At the support points in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, usually the pinch welds, frame rails or axle, on solid, level ground.
