A garage with an 8 to 10 foot ceiling cannot take a full-rise lift with a car on it, but it can take a mid-rise scissor lift. These lifts raise a car 39 to 48 inches, enough for wheels, brakes, suspension and exhaust work from a stool, and most run on 110V. This guide compares six by capacity, rise, minimum height, power, locks and warranty, and shows the ceiling each one needs.

How we scored them
Each lift is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None states ALI certification, the US standard for car lifts. Two state CE marking and get partial safety credit.

What the listings tell you
We read 14 mid-rise lift listings. All 14 stated a capacity and a maximum height, 12 stated the voltage and 13 a warranty term. None stated ALI certification; 4 stated CE marking. Many are the same few designs sold under different names, and several contradict themselves on capacity, height, voltage or warranty, so we show both figures where that happens.
Buying guide: a lift for a low ceiling
Do the ceiling math first
Ceiling needed = vehicle height + lift rise + a few inches of clearance. A 58 in sedan on a 48 in lift needs about 109 in. With an 8 foot (96 in) ceiling, the most rise you can use with that car is about 35 in. Measure to the lowest point, including the garage door track and opener. Our car lift ceiling height calculator does it for your car and every lift type.
Mid-rise vs portable low-rise
Mid-rise scissor lifts like these give 39 to 48 in and roll or bolt in place. Portable low-rise systems give about 20 in and store against a wall. Neither lets you stand under the car; for that you need a full-rise lift and a taller ceiling, covered in our best car lift for a home garage.
Minimum height and arms
Check the lift’s lowest height against your car’s ground clearance at the lift points. Lowered cars need 4.5 in or less. Swing arms and adapters let you reach the manufacturer’s lift points on different cars.
Capacity, locks and floor
Pick a capacity with margin over your heaviest vehicle. Lower onto the mechanical locks before working, and set the lift on level concrete. Mobile lifts still need a solid, level floor.
Certification
ALI certification means the model has been third-party certified to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard. None of these listings claims it. CE marking is a European self-declaration, not the same thing.
Check the ceiling a lift needs for your car, and whether 2-post, 4-post, mid-rise or scissor fits.
Check the lift's rated capacity against your heaviest vehicle, and its ceiling and concrete requirements (thickness and strength) before you buy. Install it exactly as the manufacturer specifies, use the mechanical locks before you go under, and look for ALI certification on the model. See the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI). Frequently Asked Questions
What car lift works with an 8 foot ceiling?
A mid-rise scissor lift used partway up, or a portable low-rise lift. With a 58 in car and 3 in of clearance, an 8 foot ceiling leaves about 35 in of rise. All six lifts here can stop below their maximum height.
Can I stand under a car on a mid-rise lift?
No. At 39 to 48 in, you work from a creeper seat or stool. Standing needs about 65 to 72 in of rise and a ceiling around 11 feet.
Do mid-rise lifts need to be bolted down?
Many are sold as mobile, with wheels or a mobile kit, and some can be fixed in place. Either way, use them on level concrete and follow the manual.
Do these lifts run on a normal outlet?
Most are listed as 110V or 115V. One listing here gives both 110V and 220V, so confirm the motor voltage with the seller before ordering.
Are mid-rise lifts ALI certified?
None of the six listings here states ALI certification. If certification matters to you, check the model on the Automotive Lift Institute’s directory before buying.
