Car Lift Ceiling Height Calculator
Ceiling height is the first thing that rules a car lift in or out. Enter your vehicle’s height, how high you want to lift it and your own height, and the calculator shows the ceiling you need, whether you could stand under the car, and how 2-post, 4-post, mid-rise and low-rise lifts compare in your garage.
How the calculation works
- Ceiling needed. Ceiling = vehicle height + lift height + clearance. Lift height is how high the tires leave the floor. Clearance is the gap you want above the roof, to the lowest point overhead: a beam, light, garage door track or opener. The calculator starts at 3 inches.
- Standing under the car. To stand, the underside of the car has to clear your head. Lift height needed = your height + 2 inches of headroom – the vehicle’s ground clearance.
- Lift type fit. Each lift type has a typical maximum rise. Two-post lifts also need room for the lift itself: clear-floor models have an overhead beam and usually need a much taller ceiling than floor-plate models. If you enter your ceiling height, the calculator shows the most rise each type can give you under it.
Worked example
A sedan is 58 in tall and you want the tires 70 in off the floor with 3 in of clearance: 58 + 70 + 3 = 131 in, or 10 ft 11 in of ceiling. You are 70 in tall and the car has 6 in of ground clearance, so standing under it needs 70 + 2 – 6 = 66 in of lift height.
Your garage ceiling is 120 in (10 ft). A 4-post lift can raise the car 120 – 58 – 3 = 59 in, which is useful for storage and sitting work but not for standing. A typical clear-floor 2-post lift needs a taller ceiling than you have. A mid-rise lift (around 48 in of rise) fits easily and suits wheel, brake and detailing work from a stool.
Assumptions and limits
The lift type figures are typical published ranges, not specs for a specific model, and the exact model’s installation manual is the number to trust. Ceiling height is only half the question: lifts that anchor to the floor also need concrete of a stated thickness and strength, and many need a level slab and a dedicated circuit. Measure to the lowest obstruction, including the garage door when it is open.
Check the lift's rated capacity against your heaviest vehicle, and its ceiling and concrete requirements (thickness and strength) before you buy. Install it exactly as the manufacturer specifies, use the mechanical locks before you go under, and look for ALI certification on the model. See the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI). Frequently Asked Questions
What ceiling height do I need for a car lift?
Add your vehicle’s height, the lift height you want and a few inches of clearance. For a 58 in car lifted to standing height (about 70 in), that is about 131 in, or 10 ft 11 in. Low ceilings usually point to a 4-post lift used partway up, a mid-rise lift or a portable low-rise lift.
Can I put a car lift in a garage with an 8 or 9 foot ceiling?
Not one you can stand under with a typical car on it. An 8 ft (96 in) ceiling minus a 58 in car and 3 in of clearance leaves about 35 in of rise, which fits a low-rise or mid-rise lift for wheel, brake and body work. A 9 ft ceiling gives about 47 in.
Does a 2-post lift need a higher ceiling than a 4-post?
A clear-floor 2-post lift has an overhead beam, so the lift itself needs a tall ceiling regardless of the car. Floor-plate 2-post lifts and 4-post lifts add little height of their own, so the car’s height and the rise you want set the ceiling.
What about the concrete floor?
Lifts that anchor to the floor list a minimum concrete thickness and strength. Check your slab before you buy, and do not anchor into concrete that does not meet the manufacturer’s specification.
What does ALI certified mean?
The model has been third-party certified to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety and performance standard. Look for the ALI gold label and check the model on the Automotive Lift Institute’s directory.
