How we scored them
Each compressor is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of the six listings states an electrical safety listing or an ASME tank rating, so every compressor scores zero on safety, which pulls all scores down.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metabo HPT EC914S | 9.6 | 33 | 22 | 20 | 0 | 2 |

| ECOMAX 6 Gallon | 9.5 | 28 | 20 | 22 | 0 | 2 |
| Goodyear 6 Gallon | 9.5 | 29 | 20 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 portable compressor listings under $300. Only 5 stated CFM at 90 PSI, the figure that matters for air tools, and 3 stated CFM at 40 PSI. Thirteen stated tank size, 11 stated a noise figure and 5 stated a clear warranty term. None stated a UL, ETL or CSA listing or an ASME-rated tank. Several cheaper listings gave a horsepower and tank size but no CFM at all, which makes them hard to compare.
Buying guide: portable compressors under $300
CFM at 90 PSI decides what it can run
Air tools are rated in CFM at 90 PSI. Nailers and tire chucks use well under 2 CFM, so every compressor here handles them. An air ratchet uses about 3 to 4.5 CFM and a 1/2 in impact wrench about 4 to 5 CFM in bursts, so the 3 to 4 CFM units here can run them for short jobs like lug nuts, then pause to refill. Sanders, grinders and spray guns need far more and continuously, which is a bigger compressor’s job.
Tank size and max PSI
The tank does not add CFM, it stores air. A 200 PSI tank holds more usable air than a 150 PSI tank of the same size, which is why the 6 gallon EC914S runs nailers longer between cycles. For an impact wrench used often, step up to the 20 to 30 gallon units in our impact wrench compressor guide.
Noise
Stated noise here runs from 71.5 to 82 dB. A 10 dB difference sounds roughly twice as loud, so in an attached garage the DEWALT and Metabo HPT models are much easier to live with.
Oil-free and power
All six use oil-free pumps, so there is no oil to check, but they are louder and wear faster than oil-lubricated pumps. They plug into a standard outlet; use a heavier hose rather than a long extension cord, which starves the motor.
Pick the air tools you run and get the CFM at 90 PSI and tank size to shop for.
Drain the tank after use so water does not rust it from the inside, never exceed the tool's rated pressure, wear eye protection, and run 240V units on the circuit the manual calls for. Do not run a gas engine compressor in a closed garage. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 6 gallon pancake compressor run an impact wrench?
For short jobs, yes. A 1/2 in impact wrench uses about 4 to 5 CFM at 90 PSI in bursts. A pancake rated at 3 to 4 CFM will break lug nuts loose and run them on, then needs to pause while the tank refills. For regular impact work, a 20 gallon or larger compressor is a better fit.
What is the difference between CFM at 40 PSI and at 90 PSI?
CFM at 40 PSI is always the bigger number, so some listings lead with it. Air tools are rated at 90 PSI, so compare compressors on CFM at 90 PSI. On the listings here that state both, the 90 PSI figure is about a quarter lower.
Is a 2.5 gallon compressor big enough for tires?
Yes. Topping up car and truck tires uses very little air, and the DEWALT’s 200 PSI tank refills quickly. A small tank only becomes a problem with tools that run for a long time.
Do I need to drain a portable compressor?
Yes. Compressing air condenses water in the tank. Open the drain valve after each use so the tank does not rust from the inside.
Can I use an extension cord with a portable compressor?
Short, heavy-gauge cords only, and check the manual. A long, thin cord drops the voltage and can overheat the motor; a longer air hose is the better way to reach the far side of the car.
