Ingersoll Rand 2146Q1MAX 3/4" Drive Air Impact WrenchView on Amazon
A 1/2 in air impact wrench is the tool that makes a compressor worth owning for car work: lug nuts, axle nuts, suspension bolts and seized hardware. This guide compares six by the numbers each listing states, including how much air they need at 90 PSI, because a gun your compressor cannot feed will not deliver its rated torque.

Specifications are manufacturer rated, as published on each listing and collected 5 October 2026. Nut-busting (breakaway) torque is the peak to free a stuck fastener; max reverse or working torque is a lower, steadier figure. “Not stated” means the listing gives no figure.
How we scored them
Each gun is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of these listings names a safety listing, so safety scores zero for all six.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |

| Astro 1822 ONYX | 9.6 | 28 | 22 | 20 | n/a | 1 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Safety counts only for powered gear or where the listing states safety features; where it does not apply, the score is taken over the remaining 90 points.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 air impact wrench listings. All gave a torque figure and weight, but only a few gave an air consumption in CFM, and 6 gave a clear warranty term. Torque claims mix three numbers: nut-busting, maximum reverse and working torque. The table above keeps them apart.
Buying guide: air impact wrenches
Match the gun to your compressor
Typical 1/2 in impact wrenches draw about 4 to 6 CFM at 90 PSI while running. Lug nut work is in short bursts, so a compressor rated near that figure with a 20 gallon or larger tank keeps up; a small pancake will run out quickly. Our CFM calculator adds a margin for you, and our guide to the best air compressor for an impact wrench compares tanks that fit.
Pick the air tools you run and get the CFM at 90 PSI and tank size to shop for.
Breakaway versus working torque
Breakaway is what frees a rusted nut. Working torque is what the gun delivers in forward. Most car lug nuts are torqued around 80 to 100 ft-lbs, so any gun here removes them; truck hubs and seized suspension bolts are where 1,000 ft-lbs plus helps. Always torque wheels back on with a torque wrench, not the gun.
Hose and fittings
Ingersoll Rand asks for a 3/8 in hose. A 1/4 in hose or restrictive fittings starve a 1/2 in gun and cut torque. Astro suggests high-flow fittings for the same reason.
Length and weight
Stubby guns (the 36QMAX and the Astro 1822) reach between suspension parts and in wheel wells. Full-length guns hit harder but weigh more.
Air or cordless
If your compressor is small, a battery gun may be the better buy. See our cordless impact wrench guide.
Wear eye protection with every air tool, use impact-rated sockets on impact wrenches, disconnect the air line before changing accessories, and finish lug nuts with a torque wrench to the vehicle's spec. See OSHA eye and face protection. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size compressor do I need for a 1/2 in air impact wrench?
One that delivers about 4 to 6 CFM at 90 PSI, ideally with a 20 gallon or larger tank. The Ingersoll Rand 2235TiMAX states a 6 CFM at 90 PSI minimum.
What is nut-busting torque?
It is the peak torque a gun delivers in reverse to break a stuck fastener loose. It is always higher than the working or maximum reverse figure on the same listing.
Can I use an air impact wrench to tighten lug nuts?
Only to snug them. Set the final torque with a torque wrench to your vehicle’s specification; an impact gun can over-tighten and stretch studs.
Do air impact wrenches need oil?
Yes. A few drops of air tool oil in the inlet before use, or an inline oiler, keeps the motor and hammer lubricated. The AEROPRO A398 and ACDelco ANI405A include oil.
Is a 3/8 in or 1/2 in drive better for car work?
A 1/2 in drive is the standard for lug nuts and suspension. A 3/8 in gun or an air ratchet suits smaller engine bay fasteners.
