A dual action (DA) polisher is the safe way to start paint correction: the pad spins and orbits at the same time, so it is far less likely to burn through clear coat than a rotary buffer. This guide compares six DA polishers by orbit size, speed range, power, backing plate, what comes in the kit and warranty.

How we scored them
Each polisher is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None states a UL, ETL or CSA listing, so all score zero on safety, and four give no clear warranty.

What the listings tell you
We read 14 polisher listings. Only 3 stated the orbit size, the number that most shapes how a DA feels, while 12 gave a wattage and 10 a speed range. Just 2 stated a clear warranty term, and none a safety listing. Two shared a rating pool across kits.
Buying guide: your first DA polisher
Orbit size
Orbit (throw) is how far the pad swings off center. 8 to 9 mm is easy to control and fits tight curves. 15 mm and 21 mm long-throw machines cover panels faster but take more practice on curves and edges.
Speed and power
Look for a variable speed dial: low for spreading wax, middle for polishing, higher for compounding. Constant speed control keeps the pad turning when you lean on it.
Backing plate and pads
Match pads to the backing plate: a 5 in plate takes 5.5 to 6 in pads, a 6 in plate takes about 6.5 in pads. Start with a polishing pad and a finishing pad before reaching for cutting pads.
Corded or cordless
Corded polishers run all day. Cordless ones avoid dragging a cable across fresh paint but need spare batteries for a full car.
Wash before you polish
Wash and decontaminate first, or the polisher grinds grit into the paint. An electric pressure washer makes the wash quicker.
Keep electric pressure washers on a GFCI outlet, never point the wand at people or pets, wear eye protection with polishers and chemicals, and read the label before mixing any cleaning products. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a dual action polisher safe for beginners?
Yes. A DA’s random orbit spreads heat and stops the pad when you press too hard, so it is much harder to damage paint than with a rotary polisher.
What orbit size should a beginner choose?
An 8 to 9 mm orbit is the easiest to learn on and handles curves well. Move to 15 or 21 mm when you want faster coverage on large panels.
What speed should I polish at?
Spread product at the lowest setting, then polish in the middle of the range. Check your polish’s instructions; many suggest a mid setting for most work.
Can a DA polisher remove scratches?
It removes swirls and light scratches in the clear coat. A scratch you can catch with a fingernail is usually too deep to polish out.
Do I need a kit with pads and polish?
A kit is the easiest start. Bare polishers need at least a polishing pad, a finishing pad and one all-in-one polish.
