For washing a car at home, an electric pressure washer beats gas: it is quieter, lighter, needs no fuel and has plenty of pressure for paint. The numbers that matter are the rated PSI and GPM, not the maximums, plus a foam cannon and a safe electrical setup. This guide compares six by those figures, cleaning units, hose, electrical listing and warranty.

How we scored them

Each washer is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. An ETL or CSA listing for the whole machine earns full safety points; a GFCI plug alone earns a little.

Product Shop Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5

Westinghouse ePX3100s 9.5 29 20 22 0 3

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

What the listings tell you

We read 14 electric pressure washer listings. All stated maximum PSI and GPM, and 11 a warranty term, but only some gave the lower rated figures that describe real use. Three stated an ETL or CSA listing. Two budget listings claimed 4,500 and 5,000 PSI with 2.8 and 4 GPM from a household outlet, numbers that do not line up with the brand-name machines here; we left them out.

Buying guide: a pressure washer for cars

PSI for paint

About 1,200 to 1,900 PSI is plenty for car paint, used with a 25 or 40 degree tip and the wand 12 in or more from the surface. Never use the 0 degree tip on a car.

GPM rinses faster

Flow does the rinsing. Most electric washers here are rated at 1.2 GPM; 2.0 GPM rinses noticeably faster.

Rated vs maximum

Maximum PSI and maximum GPM happen at opposite ends and never together. Rated (or PWMA) figures describe real cleaning, so compare those.

Foam cannon

A foam cannon coats the car in thick soap that loosens grit before you touch the paint. Some machines include one; others accept a 1/4 in or M22 cannon.

Electrical safety

Use a GFCI-protected outlet and keep connections out of standing water. Prefer a longer cord built into the machine over an extension cord.

After the wash, a dual action polisher takes out swirls.

Detailing safety

Keep electric pressure washers on a GFCI outlet, never point the wand at people or pets, wear eye protection with polishers and chemicals, and read the label before mixing any cleaning products. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What PSI is safe for washing a car?

Around 1,200 to 1,900 PSI with a 25 or 40 degree tip, held at least a foot from the paint. Higher-pressure machines are fine if you use wide tips and keep your distance.

Is GPM or PSI more important for car washing?

Both, but GPM rinses soap and grit away faster. Compare rated figures, not maximums.

Do I need a foam cannon?

It is not required, but it makes a safer wash: thick foam loosens dirt so you scrub less. Two picks here include one.

Can I use a pressure washer on the engine bay?

Only gently and with care around electrical parts; check your owner’s manual first. Many detailers use low pressure or no pressure washer there.

Are electric pressure washers safe to use outside?

Yes, on a GFCI-protected circuit. Several machines here have a GFCI built into the plug, and two state an ETL or CSA listing.
