How we scored them
Each ratchet is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of these listings names a safety listing, so safety scores zero for all six.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIRCAT 805-HT | 9.7 | 33 | 22 | 19 | n/a | 4 |

| Chicago Pneumatic CP886 | 9.6 | 26 | 21 | 20 | n/a | 2 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Safety counts only for powered gear or where the listing states safety features; where it does not apply, the score is taken over the remaining 90 points.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 air ratchet listings. All gave a torque figure, most gave free speed, and only a handful gave an air consumption in CFM. Noise was rated on three of the six picks. Torque runs from about 45 to 130 ft-lbs and free speed from 160 to 625 rpm.
Buying guide: air ratchets
Torque: running, not breaking
An air ratchet is for running fasteners quickly. Break tight bolts loose by hand or with an air impact wrench, then spin them out with the ratchet. A 130 ft-lbs ratchet like the AIRCAT 805-HT can do more of both, but it is longer.
Free speed
Most ratchets run 160 to 280 rpm. The Ingersoll Rand 1211MAX-D3 runs 625 rpm, which matters on long bolts.
Air use and your compressor
3/8 in ratchets typically draw around 2.5 to 4.5 CFM at 90 PSI, in short bursts. Most 20 gallon compressors keep up; small pancakes cycle often. The CRAFTSMAN states 4.4 SCFM at 90 PSI. Run your tool list through our CFM calculator.
Pick the air tools you run and get the CFM at 90 PSI and tank size to shop for.
Length and head size
Shorter ratchets (under 11 in) fit between the engine and the firewall or under the dash. Longer ones reach deeper but need more room to swing.
Noise
Stated figures range from 82 dBA (AIRCAT 802) to 98.2 dB(A) (Chicago Pneumatic CP886). Hearing protection is sensible for any air tool in a closed garage.
Wear eye protection with every air tool, use impact-rated sockets on impact wrenches, disconnect the air line before changing accessories, and finish lug nuts with a torque wrench to the vehicle's spec. See OSHA eye and face protection. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an air ratchet used for?
Running nuts and bolts on and off quickly in tight spaces, such as engine bays, brackets, valve covers and accessory drives. It is not meant to break tight fasteners loose.
How much air does a 3/8 in air ratchet need?
Typically about 2.5 to 4.5 CFM at 90 PSI. The CRAFTSMAN in this guide states 4.4 SCFM at 90 PSI.
Can an air ratchet replace an impact wrench?
No. Even the 130 ft-lbs AIRCAT 805-HT is far below a 1/2 in impact wrench. Most garages use both.
Should I use impact sockets on an air ratchet?
Standard 3/8 in sockets work on an air ratchet because it does not hammer. Impact sockets are fine too and are tougher.
Do air ratchets need oil?
Yes. Add 2 to 3 drops of air tool oil to the inlet before each use, as the QWORK and other listings advise, or use an inline oiler.
