How we scored them

Each creeper is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of these listings names a safety standard, so safety scores zero for all six.

What the listings tell you

We read 14 creeper listings. All gave a capacity, from 250 to 400 lb, and most gave dimensions, but few gave a warranty term. Several listings disagree with themselves on caster count or weight, which we note in each review.

Buying guide: mechanic creepers

Profile height

Creeper height plus your chest depth is how much clearance you need. Lowered cars need the thinnest creeper (3.5 in on the M-AUTO); trucks give room for padded benches and raised headrests.

Casters

Six casters spread load better than four. Larger 3 in casters roll over cracks, cords and debris; small ones stall. Sweep the floor before you roll.

Plastic or padded steel

Molded plastic decks are light, wipe clean of oil and have tool trays. Padded steel benches are kinder on the back for long jobs but absorb fluids.

Convertible creeper seats

Z creepers fold into a low seat for brakes, wheels and detailing, saving a second tool. They are shorter or narrower than dedicated creepers.

Getting the car up first

A creeper only helps once the car is safely supported. Lift with a floor jack and set it on jack stands before you slide under.

Garage safety

Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How low should a mechanic creeper be?

For most cars on jack stands, 4 to 4.5 in is fine. For lowered cars or low jacking heights, look for 3.5 in or less.

Are plastic creepers better than padded ones?

Plastic creepers are lighter, wider and easier to clean. Padded ones are more comfortable for long sessions. Both work when rated for your weight.

What weight capacity do I need?

Your body weight plus a margin for tools on the deck. The creepers here are rated 250 to 400 lb.

What is a topside creeper?

A raised, padded platform you lie on face down to reach over the fender into a tall engine bay, useful on trucks and vans.

Is it safe to use a creeper under a car on a jack?

Never go under a car held only by a jack. Support it on rated jack stands or a lift first.
