How we scored them
Each stand is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of these listings names a safety standard, so safety scores zero for all six, and most state no warranty.
| Product | Shop Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| JEGS 555-80059 | 9.4 | 29 | 22 | 16 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
What the listings tell you
We read 14 engine stand listings. All gave a capacity, from 750 to 2,000 lb, but few gave a clear warranty and none named a safety standard. Lock positions and caster counts are often missing. Capacity is the figure to check first.
Buying guide: engine stands
Capacity with margin
Rate the stand for the complete engine you will hang on it, including heads, intake and accessories, and add a margin. Four-cylinder and aluminum engines fit 750 lb stands; iron V8s with heads belong on 1,000 to 1,500 lb stands. Remember the load sits off-center once the engine rotates.
How the head turns and locks
Most stands turn by a handle and lock with a pin or bolt. More lock positions (6 on the Performance Tool, 8 on the OTC) let you work at more angles. A gear drive like the K Tool’s turns slowly and holds where you stop, which matters with a heavy, unbalanced block.
Base and casters
Four or five casters roll more easily than three. Put the heavy end of the engine toward the long leg of the base, and lock the wheels before you work.
Storage
Stands that fold or break down free up floor space between projects. Check weight too: they run from 30.4 to 107.8 lb here.
Getting the engine onto the stand
You will need an engine hoist to lift the engine and hang it on the stand, and a separate leveler helps set the angle. Bolt the mounting arms to the bellhousing bolt holes with grade 8 hardware of the correct length.
Use rated jack stands on solid ground, wear eye protection with power and air tools, keep fuel-burning equipment out of a closed garage, and follow the manual for every tool. Read our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What capacity engine stand do I need?
One rated well above your complete engine’s weight. Light four-cylinder engines fit a 750 lb stand; iron V8s with heads need 1,000 lb or more, and 1,500 lb adds margin.
Can an engine stand tip over?
Yes, if the engine’s center of gravity sits beyond the base. Mount the engine centered on the head, keep the long leg of the base under the engine and do not roll it over thresholds or cracks while loaded.
Do I need a hoist to use an engine stand?
Yes. An engine hoist lifts the engine out of the car and positions it on the stand. Never try to lift an engine onto a stand by hand.
What bolts hold an engine to a stand?
Use grade 8 bolts sized for your block’s bellhousing holes, long enough to engage the threads fully. Many stands include bolts, but check their size and length against your engine.
Is a gear-driven engine stand worth it?
For heavy engines you rotate often, yes. The gearbox controls the motion and holds position, so the engine cannot swing when you pull the pin.
