A typical two-car garage, about 24 x 24 ft with a 9 ft ceiling, needs roughly 20,000 to 42,000 BTU per hour to stay 40 degrees warmer than outside, depending on insulation. That means a 240V electric heater of 5 to 7.5 kW for most garages, or a vented gas unit heater for cold, uninsulated ones. This guide compares six by heat output, power or fuel, installation, controls, stated safety listing and warranty.

How we scored them
Each heater is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A stated ETL, UL or CSA listing earns full safety points; built-in overheat or flame protection alone earns a little.

What the listings tell you
We read 14 garage heater listings. Most search results were 1,500 W, 120V space heaters, which cannot heat a two-car garage. Five named a safety listing, 8 stated a warranty term, and only 5 gave a BTU figure; most gave watts. We left out unvented propane heaters, which are not suitable for a closed garage.
Buying guide: heating a two-car garage
Size it first
BTU per hour = garage volume (cu ft) x temperature rise (F) x an insulation factor. For 24 x 24 x 9 ft and a 40 degree rise, that is about 20,700 BTU insulated, 27,600 with some insulation and 41,500 uninsulated. Run your own numbers in the garage heater BTU calculator.
Electric: watts, volts and the circuit
1 kW is about 3,412 BTU. A 5 kW heater gives about 17,000 BTU and a 7.5 kW heater about 25,600. On 240V, 5 kW draws about 21 A and 7.5 kW about 31 A, and because a heater is a continuous load, the circuit should be rated about 25 percent above that. Use a licensed electrician and the breaker and wire size in the manual.
Gas: vented unit heaters
Natural gas or propane unit heaters give 30,000 to 80,000 BTU and suit cold, uninsulated garages. They need a gas line, proper venting and clearances installed to code, and often a 10 ft ceiling.
Mounting and controls
Ceiling-mount heaters keep the floor clear. A thermostat holds a steady temperature and saves energy; a timer stops you leaving it on overnight.
Insulate the door
The garage door is usually the biggest heat leak. Insulating it can cut the heater size you need.
Estimate the BTU your garage needs from its size, insulation and climate, plus the circuit for electric.
Never run a fuel-burning heater, generator or engine in a closed garage: carbon monoxide builds up fast and has no smell. Fit a CO alarm, keep clearances to cars and storage, use vented gas heaters installed to code, and put 240V electric heaters on a dedicated circuit. See CPSC carbon monoxide guidance. Frequently Asked Questions
How many BTU do I need for a 2-car garage?
About 20,000 BTU for an insulated 24 x 24 ft garage with a 9 ft ceiling and a 40 degree rise, about 28,000 with some insulation and about 42,000 uninsulated.
Is a 5,000 watt heater enough for a 2-car garage?
For an insulated garage in a mild climate, often yes: 5,000 W is about 17,000 BTU. For colder climates or less insulation, 7,500 W or a gas heater is a better fit.
What size breaker does a 7,500 watt garage heater need?
It draws about 31 A at 240V. As a continuous load the circuit should be rated about 25 percent higher, which typically means a 40 A circuit. Follow the heater’s manual and local code.
Is a gas or electric garage heater cheaper to run?
It depends on your local gas and electricity rates. Electric heaters cost less to install if you have panel capacity; gas unit heaters cost more to install but deliver more heat for cold climates.
Can I use a propane heater in a closed garage?
Not an unvented one. Fuel-burning heaters produce carbon monoxide. Use a vented heater installed to code, and fit a carbon monoxide alarm.
